BARWODA Pig-Raising:
Helping 20 women start micro-enterprises to generate income and funds for community health and education
Introductions
A local community-based organization (BARWODA) is putting together a three day convention to train 20 women in rural Uganda the
skills required for pig-raising.
We aim to fund:
- 2 experts to train them
- 10 piglets needed to start their venture.
The Innovation
After a single year, each pig will have given birth to an average of 8-10 piglets, an 800% increase in initial investment.
Every year, each member is responsible for sending 3 piglets, totalling 60, to BARWODA (Bayira Rural Women's Development
Association), to generate funds for community health and development.
> Each piglet can be sold for $27 USD.
> Each adult pig represents a profit of $55, if the time is invested to raise it.
The Change
After only a year and a half to start up:
- Each year, $1270 raised for communal health, education, and protection of rights.
- Each woman owns a small-scale pig farm that generates 24-30 pigs per year ($700+).
- $15,000 each year in benefits! $14,000 is from 20 farms that generate $700/year.
- Empowers women socially and economically, making them community leaders.
