Introductions

Kamuga Women Training Centre (KAWOTRAC) is a community based organization in rural Uganda whose mission is to enhance the dignity and promote the rights of women living in poor conditions, and to enable them realize their full potential.

The Innovation

Having trained in poultry farming and having already designed and built a chicken coop, these women hope to use a Bright Ideas Grant to purchase 250 one month old chicks which, after 4 months of growth, are conservatively expected to produce 200 eggs per day, or $17 USD. Deducting all expenses (feed, water, labor), that leaves about $10 USD a day, or $300 USD a month.

The Change

This means that this project will pay for itself in 8 months, and do so again and again every 4 months thereafter. In only 5 years, this poultry farm will have generated over $15,000 USD -- enough to make a substantial change in the health and empowerment of a community.
