NamibiAlive! :
HIV-Preventing Music Video
Using Music to Address HIV
2 Peace Corps Volunteers first launched NamibiAlive! in December 2006 -- an annual compilation CD consisting of recordings from a wide range of prominent
Namibian musicians. Prior to each song on the album, the song's musician delivers a 15-20 second HIV/AIDS prevention message.
10,000 CDs were then distributed free of charge to taxis, mini-buses, truck drivers, and all major public transportation points operating in Namibia.
~7% of Namibian population heard this CD daily!
Developed with support from PEPFAR, NamibiAlive! offers an innovative approach to HIV prevention -- bringing the message to at-risk
individuals by taking AIDS prevention on the road. The CD provides information on HIV prevention using the ABC approach --
Abstain, Be faithful, and correct and consistent use of Condoms.
The ABC approach, developed in Africa, is an evidence-based, public health approach that provides information to people, so they can
decide how to best protect themselves. The musical compilation also provides information on accessing confidential HIV counseling and
testing services and promotes gender equity in relationships.
How We Fit In
This year, Promote Africa hopes to build on the initial success of the NamibiAlive CD by helping produce a NamibiAlive Music Video
for one of the biggest artists in Namibia, VM6, with a song written specifically for this project. By broadcasting it through Namibian
Broadcasting Corporation on the public airwaves, we hope to be able to provide the Namibian population with free, easy access to this
video and its message.
